Pico Island
The Perfect Place
Pico is the second-largest island in the Azores, covering an area of 444.9 km² and defined by its elongated form, measuring 46.2 km in length and up to 15.8 km in width. The island is dominated by the Pico Mountain volcano on its western half and lies just 6 km from the neighbouring island of Faial. It has a population of 14,148 inhabitants (2011 census).
Pico is the southernmost island of the Central Group of the Azores archipelago and one of the vertices of the so-called “Triangle Islands.” Its highest point, at 2,350 metres above sea level, is located at Piquinho and is not only the summit of the island but also the highest point in Portugal. The mountain stands as a constant presence in the landscape, shaping both the geography and the identity of the island.
