History

Casas de Incensos emerged from a small coastal village locally known as “houses behind the islet”, located near Pontas Negras on the south coast of Pico Island.

History

A place shaped by the sea and by memory. Slow travel and off grid accommodation in Azores.

Until the mid-20th century, this settlement was home to families whose daily lives were closely tied to fishing and agriculture.

With the construction of the regional road around 1940, residents sought better access and gradually left the village. Over time, Atlantic weather and nature reclaimed the site, leaving the buildings partially in ruins.

The village consisted of eight structures, including family homes, traditional mills (atafonas) and rainwater cisterns. More than twenty people lived here, within a strong communal fabric shaped by shared labour, music and a deep relationship with the sea. That memory remains present today, not as reconstruction, but as continuity.

As a Tourism Village project, Casas de Incensos maintains the original logic of the settlement, valuing local identity and offering a form of hospitality that is calm, personal and deeply rooted in place.
